Steady white noise
A bright, even hush that covers sudden sounds.
You want a steady, even sound that covers the sudden ones: a door, a dog, a car outside. White noise is the brightest of the noise colours, a clean hiss with the same energy at every pitch. If it ever feels too sharp, try pink, which is softer at the top.
Try this: Open the free noise player, pick white, and turn it up only until the room feels softer. Quieter than you think is usually right.

Deep brown noise
A low, soft rumble for when deep sounds are the trouble.
Low sounds are more your trouble, like traffic rumble or a neighbour's music, or maybe hiss just feels harsh to you. Brown noise turns the high end right down and leaves a deep, rolling rumble that is easy to stop noticing.
Try this: Try brown noise in the free player at a low volume, and give it three or four nights before you decide.

Soft rain, or its cousin pink noise
A natural patter that never quite repeats.
You like a sound with some texture: steady enough to fade into the background, but never quite the same twice. Rain is your match. On nights you want something even steadier, try pink noise, which softens the high end so it sounds more like steady rain.
Try this: Start with light rain at a low volume. If the room has sudden noises too, try heavier rain or pink noise instead.

A crackling fireplace
Warm and close, for when silence feels too loud.
Total silence isn't your friend. A crackling fire gives the room a little life and warmth without asking for your attention. On cool nights, try it with light rain underneath for something richer.
Try this: Play a fireplace sound while you read in bed, then let it carry on quietly after the lights go out.

A gentle bedtime story
A slow story to follow when your mind is busy.
When your mind is busy, a sound on its own isn't quite enough. You settle best with something gentle to follow: a slow story where nothing much happens, read in a calm voice. Most nights you won't hear the ending, and that's the point.
Try this: Pick a short, slow story and listen with the lights off. Don't try to follow every word.
