MoonEase is a focused set of calm tools for bedtime only: sleep sounds you can layer, 200 stories for grown-ups, breathing guides and a timer that fades out, with no ads. Insight Timer is a very large free library of guided meditations from many teachers, with a free meditation timer and a community.
They are different kinds of app, so the useful question is who each one is for. If your night is a sound, a story and a gentle end, our view is that MoonEase is built for you. Details here are as of October 2026, from each app’s own pages and ours.
Insight Timer or MoonEase: are they even the same kind of app?
Not really, and it is kinder to say so.
MoonEase is a bedtime tool. It has sleep sounds, bedtime stories, breathing guides and a sleep timer, and nothing else. There are no teachers, no courses and no community, which is the point. It runs on iPhone, iPad and Android, with a desktop version in your browser.
Insight Timer describes itself as the world’s largest free audio library for everyday wellbeing, which is its own claim. On its site you find guided meditations for sleep, stress, focus and grief, plus music, breathwork and yoga from many teachers, and a free meditation timer with bells and ambient sounds.

Who is each one for?
Here are five everyday people. They are illustrations, not real reviews.
The tired one at eleven
Teeth brushed, lamp off, too tired to read a menu of options. They want rain, a story and a gentle end. MoonEase fits.
The Caribbean listener
Misses the sound of rain on a zinc roof and the way people talk at home. Caribbean Nights has 42 stories, and in 22 of them the characters speak in Jamaican voices, made with voice software. See Caribbean bedtime stories. MoonEase fits.
The mixer
Likes rain and a low fire together, at their own volumes, saved for next time. MoonEase fits, with Premium.
The morning sitter
Twenty minutes before the house wakes up, in the same spot, with a bell at the end. This person wants a free timer and a teacher they trust. Insight Timer fits.
The one who wants both
A teacher-led sit by day, and by night something that takes no thought. They keep both apps and give each a job.

What is it like to choose when you are already tired?
Think of walking into a very big library at the end of a long day. In the morning, that is a gift. You browse, you follow a hunch, you find a teacher you did not know about.
At night it can be different. Decisions cost more when you are tired, and a long list asks more of you than a short one. That is not a flaw in a big library. It is just that the same size feels different at 7am and at 11pm.
Where each app sits
What greets you when you open it.
MoonEase takes the opposite approach for the end of the day. The home screen suggests a sound and a timer for tonight. You start a sound, maybe pick a story, and set the timer. The sound dips under the narration, and fades out when the time is up. If you want to know why a stopping sound matters, see a sleep timer that fades out.
A free library and a free starting point are two different gifts. MoonEase gives you a free place to begin, with no ads, and Premium adds the sound mixer, longer timers and the full story library. Premium is $9.99 a month or $49.99 a year, as of October 2026.
What does MoonEase add for bedtime?
MoonEase is deliberately plain. It does not teach and it does not track. It helps you wind down.
MoonEase in numbers
From the app and its website, as of October 2026.
- 82 sleep sounds, from heavy rain and rain on a tin roof to campfires and loons on a lake. With Premium you can blend up to eight and save the mix.
- 200 bedtime stories for grown-ups, where nothing much happens. The idea is to give your mind somewhere soft to go, which we explain in our guide to bedtime stories for grown-ups. 109 have full narration made with voice software, and the rest are read by your phone’s own voice.
- Three breathing guides: box, 4-7-8 and coherent breathing.
- A fading timer, from 15 minutes up to 8 hours.
- No ads, and no sleep tracking. The free sounds and stories work offline.
MoonEase is a wind-down tool. It does not treat insomnia and it does not give medical advice.

Where is Insight Timer stronger?
Quite a few places, and they are real.
- Generosity. The App Store page lists thousands of guided meditations, breathwork, yoga, sleep meditations, white noise, ambient sounds and a timer among its free features. Paid membership adds things like offline listening and courses.
- Teachers. Many teachers publish there, so you can find a voice and style you like and keep going back.
- A sitting timer and community. A free timer with bells for a daily sit, plus groups and progress stats.
If you want a place to build a meditation habit, Insight Timer is hard to beat on range.

- You like groups, progress stats and a community around your practice.

Could you keep both on your phone?
Yes, and it may be the happiest answer. Many people would keep both and give each a job.
- Morning: a short teacher-led sit, with the free timer and its bell.
- Evening: put the phone down for a while. Our bedtime routine for adults has ideas for the hour before bed.
- Last step: open MoonEase, choose a sound, start a story and set the timer. Then put the phone face down.
After a week, notice which one you opened without thinking. That is a better guide than any list.
