MoonEase is only for bedtime: sleep sounds that fade out, 200 stories for grown-ups, three breathing guides and no ads. Headspace is a mindfulness and mental health app that also has a proper sleep section, and it is a good pick if you want help during the day as well.
If you want the end of your day to be simple, our view is that MoonEase fits it best, and a quick quiz below will help you check. Details here are as of October 2026, from each app’s own pages and ours.
Headspace or MoonEase: which is built for your night?
MoonEase puts everything into the end of the day. You get sleep sounds you can layer, bedtime stories written for grown-ups, three breathing guides and a sleep timer that fades the sound out over about 30 seconds. It runs on iPhone, iPad and Android, with a desktop version in your browser. It has no ads and no sleep tracking.
Headspace describes itself around meditation and mindfulness, with “1,000+ expert-led exercises” on its own site, stress and anxiety support, and optional coaching and online therapy. Sleep is one section among several. Here is the short version, with MoonEase first.

Five questions: which sounds more like your night?
Pick the answer that is closest to true, even if neither is perfect. Keep a tally of As and Bs.
1. What do you want from the last ten minutes of the day? - A. To stop thinking and be given somewhere soft to go. - B. To work on what is keeping me up, like stress or a worry.
2. How do you feel about learning something new at night? - A. By night I want to press play and not learn anything. - B. I would happily follow a course or guided series.
3. How much do you want one app to cover? - A. Only the end of the day. - B. Daytime help too, like stress and mindfulness.
4. What do you want to hear in the dark? - A. Rain, a stream, or a story with nothing to solve. - B. A guide talking me through something.
5. How do you feel about extras? - A. I want no extras and a very short list of things to tap. - B. Coaching or therapy as an option down the line would be useful.

What do your answers say?
Count your As and your Bs. First, here is where the two apps sit on one line.
Where each app sits
What you want from the last ten minutes of the day.
Now your result.
Mostly A. You want the day to be over, gently. MoonEase is built for exactly that. It is sounds, a story and a timer, and the sound fades away on its own. Try it with a rain sound, as in our guide to sounds to fall asleep to.
Mostly B. You sound like someone who wants to work on the thing that keeps you up, as well as soothe it. Headspace is built for that, with sleep help inside a wider mindfulness app.
A mix. Very common, and fine. Many people practise during the day and switch off at night, which can mean one app for each job. If your evenings are the part you want sorted, start with MoonEase and see how it feels.
What do you get in MoonEase at night?
You can start a sound, pick a story and set a timer in a few taps. The home screen even suggests a sound and a timer for tonight.
MoonEase in numbers
From the app and its website, as of October 2026.
Sounds. There are 82, from heavy rain and rain on a tin roof to campfires and loons on a lake. With Premium you can blend up to eight with their own volumes and save the mix, or start from a ready-made one such as Rainy Cabin. The free plan plays one sound at a time.
Stories. All 200 are calm and original, written for grown-ups, and a sound can play softly beneath them. 109 have full narration made with voice software, and the rest are read by your phone’s own voice. 42 of the stories make up Caribbean Nights, and in 22 of those the characters speak in Jamaican voices, also made with voice software.
Breathing. Box breathing, 4-7-8 and coherent breathing, with spoken cues and a soft vibration if you want them.
A gentle end. The timer runs from 15 minutes to 8 hours and the sound fades out slowly. If you wonder whether sound should run all night or stop on a timer, see sleep sounds all night or on a timer.
It has no ads, no sleep tracking, and the free sounds and stories work offline. Premium is $9.99 a month or $49.99 a year, as of October 2026.

Where is Headspace stronger?
A few places, and they are real.
- Beyond sleep. If stress, worry or a heavy workload is what keeps you up, Headspace offers courses and exercises that work on it during the day. MoonEase does not.
- Waking in the night. Headspace has SOS exercises for getting back to sleep, which MoonEase does not have as a separate feature.
- Extras. Optional coaching and online therapy, and apps for Apple Watch, Mac and Apple Vision.
If you want a mind-training app that also helps you sleep, Headspace is a good answer.

What about a racing mind at night?
This is the question behind most searches like this one, so here is a straight answer. Plenty of people lie awake with their thoughts going round. Slow breathing, a steady sound and a gentle story can give a busy mind something quiet to follow instead. That is all MoonEase does, and it does not treat anxiety or insomnia.
If sleeplessness keeps coming back, or it is affecting your days, it is worth talking to a doctor. An app is a bedtime companion, not a replacement for that. Our guide to falling back asleep at 3am has practical ideas for those hours.
Fair comparison note: Headspace is a product name or trademark of its owner. JPott Studios is not affiliated with, sponsored by or endorsed by it. What we say here comes from its own pages and public store listings, read in October 2026, and may have changed since, so please check the source before you decide.
