MoonEase is built for the end of the day: sleep sounds that fade out, 200 bedtime stories for grown-ups, three breathing guides and no ads. Calm is a wide wellbeing library for the whole day, and it is a strong pick if you want meditations and music as well as sleep.
If what you want is a sound, a story and a timer, with nothing else to wander into, our view is that MoonEase fits that night best. Details here are as of October 2026, from each app’s own pages and ours.
Calm or MoonEase: which is built for your night?
MoonEase does one job. It helps you wind down with sleep sounds, bedtime stories written for grown-ups, breathing guides and a sleep timer. It runs on iPhone, iPad and Android, with a desktop version in your web browser, and it has no ads and no sleep tracking.
Calm is an app for sleep, meditation and relaxation. Its App Store page lists Sleep Stories, guided meditations, daily sessions, programs, breathing exercises and music. It is free to download, with some features free forever and a paid Calm Premium for the full library.
Here is the short version, with MoonEase first.

The table lists features. The real difference is the shape of the app, and that is easier to see on a single line.
Where each app sits
What the app asks of you at the end of the day.
Neither end is better. A wide library gives you choice, and a short path gives you less to decide. It depends on what kind of night you are having.
What does eleven at night look like in MoonEase?
Picture a Tuesday. The lamp is off, the day is mostly done, and you are tired but your head is still tidying up.
You open MoonEase and the home screen suggests a sound and a timer for tonight. You tap rain. You pick a story, say The Veranda After Rain, and the rain dips softly beneath the narrator. When the story ends, the rain carries on until the timer runs out, and then it fades away over about 30 seconds instead of stopping with a click. The sound keeps playing with the screen locked, so you can put the phone down.
There is nothing to scroll and nothing to learn. The rest of the app is sounds, stories and breathing. In a wider app, the same moment starts with a bigger choice: a Sleep Story, a breathing exercise, some music. For some people that variety is a pleasure. At eleven, plenty of us would rather have a short path, and that is the path MoonEase is built to be.

What do you actually get in MoonEase?
Here are the numbers first, and then what each one means.
MoonEase in numbers
From the app and its website, as of October 2026.
Sounds you can layer. There are 82 sleep sounds, from heavy rain and rain on a tin roof to campfires and loons on a lake. With Premium you can blend up to eight, set the volume of each and save your mixes. The free plan plays one sound at a time. Our guide to rain sounds for sleep is a gentle place to start.
A timer that ends kindly. It runs from 15 minutes to 8 hours, and the sound fades out over about 30 seconds. We wrote about why a slow fade matters in a sleep timer that fades out.
Three breathing guides. Box breathing, 4-7-8 and coherent breathing, with spoken cues and a soft vibration if you want them.
No ads and no sleep tracking. MoonEase keeps a simple record of the nights and minutes you used it, and nothing about how you slept. The free sounds and stories work offline, and Premium sounds download once, then play without a connection.
MoonEase is a wind-down tool. It does not treat insomnia, and it is not medical advice.
What are the bedtime stories like?
They are written for grown-ups, and almost nothing happens in them. That is the point. A story gives a busy mind somewhere soft to go, and our guide to bedtime stories for grown-ups explains why that works.
There are 200 of them. Of those, 109 have full narration made with voice software, and the rest are read aloud by your phone’s own voice. Start a sound first and it plays quietly under the story.
Then there is Caribbean Nights. It has 42 stories set on verandas, in coves and along hill roads in Jamaica and around the Caribbean, and in 22 of them the characters speak in Jamaican voices, made with voice software. If you want a story that sounds like home, or like somewhere you would like to be, start with Caribbean bedtime stories.

Where is Calm stronger?
Calm covers more ground, and it is worth being plain about that.
- Range. Meditations, daily sessions, seven and 21 day programs and music for focus, as well as sleep. If you want one app for the whole day, it does that and MoonEase does not.
- Famous voices. Its Sleep Stories are read by well-known narrators, which some people love in the dark.
- Apple devices. Apple Watch, Apple TV and Mac apps, and saving sessions to Apple Health.
If those matter more than a focused bedtime tool, Calm is a good choice.

Which one should you choose?
Which one is for you?
Find the sentence that sounds like your night.
If you want the detail behind those, here it is.
Choose MoonEase if
- You want the end of the day only: a sound, a story and a timer.
- You like stories for grown-ups where nothing much happens.
- You want Caribbean stories, 22 of them with Jamaican character voices.
- You want to layer rain, fire and wind and save the mix.
- You want the sound to fade out slowly, with no ads and no sleep tracking.
- You would like it to work offline.
Choose Calm if
- You want meditations, programs and music as well as sleep, in one app.
- You want Sleep Stories read by well-known voices.
- You use Apple Watch, Apple TV or Mac and want it on all of them.

How can you test both in three nights?
Use the same time every night so the only thing that changes is the app.
- Night one: MoonEase. Start a rain sound, set a timer and play a story. Notice what happens when the sound fades.
- Night two: Calm. Choose a Sleep Story or a breathing exercise. Notice whether choosing felt easy or tiring.
- Night three: whichever you liked more, without looking at anything else first.
Then ask which one you reached for without thinking. That is the one that fits. For the rest of the evening, our bedtime routine for adults shows where either one belongs.
Fair comparison note: Calm is a product name or trademark of its owner. JPott Studios is not affiliated with, sponsored by or endorsed by it. What we say here comes from its own pages and public store listings, read in October 2026, and may have changed since, so please check the source before you decide. Is MoonEase a good Calm alternative?

How much does MoonEase cost?

Can I use MoonEase offline?
Yes. The free sounds and stories are built in, and Premium sounds download once, then play without a connection.
Does MoonEase track my sleep?
